The Blue Futures Pathways expedition by the SOI Foundation is one of the most unique and influential experiential learning programs on the planet.
Over 2 weeks, youth beginning careers in the Sustainable Blue Economy in anything from communications to ocean tech come together to explore career paths and build hands-on skills for their future working in, on, or by the water. Living aboard a Coast Guard-turned-research vessel, the youth take part in workshops and field trips covering expedition themes of storytelling, science, ocean tech, and seafaring, all run by expert Educator partners. In 2024, the BFP Expedition took us from Iqaluit to St. John's via Nunatsiavut and the mighty Torngat Mountains. Polar bears, dolphins, icebergs, and the Aurora were just some of the sights along the way.
As a member of the Media Team aboard this year's expedition, our job was distilling the experience of the youth aboard into a variety of deliverables during and immediately following the expedition. Days are long but the sights and stories that unfolded everyday made this an immensely powerful experience.
